Dear PKBadger, I inform you that Opera in love - Romeo and Juliet is not the show you saw.
Sitting in the theater, watching this movie for the first time, I heard static break in to interrupt the beginning credits. It gave the scene life, and, in turn, the scene gave life to the music. She states there should be some sort of disclaimer to warn audiences about "mistaking the audacious version of his (Shakespeare's) star crossed teen lovers for an extended music video." For her, this movie should have been called Baz Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet; Rozen says the director plunked down the tragic romance into a "modern urban hellhole." Within this hellhole, are "warring gangs, piled on religious iconography, and pointless water imagery, and, oh yes, Mercutio is a singing drag queen." Rozen says what's missing amid the "frantic activity and eye candy" is the poetry.
She says there is nothing wrong with updating a classic, but hopes this "rocket fueled Romeo and Juliet won't be the only version its young audience ever sees. I found the introduction to the movie to be riveting.
"Closing Time" by Semisonic could work well for that sequence too.
"Marry You" by Bruno Mars is a good choice for when that subject is thought about by the characters.
Dear Fiona, I inform you that Opera in love - Romeo and Juliet is not the show you saw.
This song speaks to Tony's wonder at his first sight of Maria. "Tonight" from West Side Story- This song speaks to the electrifying danger of two lovers meeting in secret against their parents wishes and has many underlying motifs that are reminiscent of the play. "Cool" from West Side Story- This song reflects the tension between the Capulets and Montagues that pervade the play, symbolized by the conflict of two gangs. "Say something" by A Great Big World- This slow ballad expresses the heartbreak and loss at the climax of the play. "Love Story" by Taylor Swift- This song strongly alludes to Shakespeare's original play as a metaphor for expressing first love and forbidden romance. "Romeo and Juliet" by the Killers- This song similarly invokes the cultural associations of just through its title. "Kissing You" by Des'ree- In Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of the play, this song plays over the background of the lover's first meeting and expounds the beauty of love. "Romeo and Juliet" by Dire Straits- This slow song attempts to capture the thematic heart of the play while updating it for modern audiences. "Come What May" from Moulin Rouge- This is a stereotypical lover's anthem that captures the beauty of true love. "Thinking Out Loud" by Ed Sheeran- I think this song nicely captures the optimism and lasting love of Romeo and Juliet when they finally marry and spend their wedding night together.
"Maria" from West Side Story- As a musical based of the premise of Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story has many songs that share thematic similarities with Shakespeare's original play.
Another song that comes to mind right away is Taylor Swift's performance of "Love Story," which while not completely accurate to the play, references the star-crossed lovers.
Hutch Hutchinson performed the song "Reflections," which includes lyrics extolling a love that will be "written down in history like Romeo and Juliet." An opposing perspective is illustrated in the song "Samson and Delilah" as performed by Bad Manners; here the lyrics describe a relationship as varying between the undying naive love of Romeo and Juliet and Delilah's betrayal of Sampson.
